Yolanda Stevens: MLK Day program set for Jan. 19 with student participation and community dialogues

The Huber Heights Citizen Action Commission finalized plans for its Martin Luther King Jr. Day program, scheduling the event to begin at 11 a.m. with venue access at 8 a.m. and a community lunch provided by Savory Skillet.

"We have finalized the program," said Commissioner Yolanda Stevens, who led the task group, describing an opening video, Monticello choir performance, a panel/reflection session facilitated by Jean Newby Al Nasir, and structured small-group discussions framed by four guiding questions about community challenges and collective action. Stevens said students will help with facilitation and that the commission will present a plaque in recognition of Lou Dell.

Staff said the program booklet and AV needs (including two lapel microphones) will be finalized this weekend and that commissioners and task-group volunteers should arrive by 10 a.m. to set up. The commission agreed not to run a clothing or food drive this year because of the compressed timeline. The next procedural step is for staff to confirm whether the mayor will present the city proclamation and to distribute the final agenda and publicity materials.
