Wise County adopts historic courthouse preservation and parking policy

The Wise County Commissioners' Court on March 23 adopted a new Historic Wise County Courthouse Building Use, Preservation and Stewardship Policy developed with the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program and county facilities staff. County Judge J.D. Clark said the policy emphasizes building preservation and a new parking policy for courthouse employees and patrons.
"Parking on the square should be reserved for patrons of the Courthouse and the businesses surrounding it," Clark said, noting that handicapped parking meets TDLR and ADA requirements. The policy requires all staff working in the historic courthouse, including new hires, to sign an acknowledgment of the policy; Judge Clark said the Court is exercising its statutory authority to regulate the facility.
The Court unanimously adopted the policy after Clark described collaboration with the Texas Historic Courthouse program and Wise County Facilities Manager Jimmy Counts. The district judge's specific security-related parking arrangements will be handled internally, Clark said. The adoption was recorded as a formal motion and carried without recorded opposition.
The policy ties to grant requirements from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program and aims to balance preservation with access for courthouse patrons and nearby businesses. The Court did not change statutory responsibilities for any outside agencies; the policy governs county stewardship and staff responsibilities going forward.
