The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education met in a special session on July 27 to review a draft policy intended to define appropriate communication between staff and students and to comply with recently passed Wisconsin laws. General Counsel Aka told the board that Acts 88, 89 and 57 and a July 10 U.S. Department of Education release informed the draft and said the district’s policy must be in effect by Sept. 1."This topic is of utmost importance to us, and that's because it involves and concerns student safety," General Counsel Aka said, framing the policy as a student-safety issue. She also said, "Act 89 is the act that will provide school districts across the state time to adopt policies ... and the policy has to be effective by September 1."
