Houston County approves multiple home-occupation special exceptions, tables one application

The Houston County Board of Commissioners approved seven special-exception permits for home-occupation businesses following a public hearing on Dec. 3 in Perry.
Chief Building Inspector Tim Andrews presented Special Exception Applications #2812 through #2819. The board approved applications #2812 (Michael Keeler), #2813 (Sharon Kornegay), #2814 (Kevin & Jennifer Taylor), #2815 (Jerron & Cameca Ashley), #2816 (Joshua Brown), #2818 (Randy Brooks) and #2819 (Robert Kidney) and tabled #2817 (Dylan and Hannah Swafford) after the applicants failed to appear. No opposition to the listed applicants was recorded during the hearing.
County Attorney Tom Hall told applicants, "even if the Board of Commissioners approves an application, neighborhood covenants may still impose certain restrictions upon or against home businesses." The board'level approval does not nullify private restrictive covenants, Hall said, and applicants were reminded to consult their covenants before proceeding.
Chairman Perdue instructed successful applicants to next apply for a county business license at the Commissioner's Office as the subsequent step in formalizing operations. The approvals were made by motion of Mr. Gottwals, seconded by Mr. Byrd, and carried unanimously by the five commissioners.
