Nemaha County’s Board of Commissioners devoted significant time in 2023 to highway maintenance, bridge projects and related engineering contracts.
Early in the year commissioners reengaged Mainelli Wagner & Associates to perform highway superintendent duties and approved multiple bridge inspection and engineering contracts. Midwest Engineering was contracted for routine bridge inspections ($6,835.00) and fracture-critical inspections ($41,350.00) for 2023.
The board solicited bids and on Aug. 2 opened five sealed bids for the C-64(339) Nemaha Northwest (Hawxby) bridge. After evaluation, on Aug. 16 commissioners awarded the project to KEA Constructors LLC for $664,819.62 with a start date of Aug. 28, 2023. The project is a concrete-deck slab bridge with related incidental work.
Other highway items handled through the year included approval of multiple ROW applications for telecom and utility providers (Windstream, OPPD, Charter, Viaero), awarding CBMP and bridge-match contracts (Vogtscapes, JJK Construction, Mainelli Wagner) and approving a county-match reimbursement for bridge grants. The board also approved the county’s One & Six Year Road and Street Plan and adopted Resolution #2023-02 formalizing that plan.
Commissioners recorded and approved vendor payments and large equipment financing related to road operations, including multiple claims and payments to Martin Marietta and equipment financiers recorded in the county claims ledger.
