Planning board urges parking study and immediate code fixes

Amy Friskey, chairwoman of the planning board, told the joint meeting that parking is the planning board’s top priority and recommended a study to clarify short- and long-term needs. "A parking or a traffic study that would help us to ensure both short term parking needs are met as well as the long term parking demands," she said, framing the study as a tool to guide code changes and downtown streetscape work.
Trustees and board members discussed faster, interim fixes to ambiguous sections of the zoning code that currently let projects meet the letter of unclear standards while undermining desired outcomes. Attorney Joe McKay said he can draft corrections and recommended public hearings and CEQA review when amendments are substantive. The group also agreed to pursue grants — a quoted estimate of about $25,000 for a study was discussed — and to ask staff to apply for feasibility/strategic-planning funding to cover near-term work.
