Commissioners consider creating a county fire marshal office and related training costs

Dion Bumpus urged the court to consider using reallocated preliminary budget funds to stand up a county fire marshal office that would oversee fire codes and permitting. She outlined a staffing stipend proposal (a $750 pay‑period stipend with annualized load of about $19,500), $3,000 for training, $200 for uniforms and a capital/outfitting line for radios and equipment (initially $39,185 before internal transfers). "That would include the stipend, the loaded, any of the equipment that would be needed for this first year, the classes," Bumpus said.
Commissioners asked staff to obtain quotes for code adoption and to reclassify software costs into IT’s budget. Bumpus reported she had two quotes to amend and adopt county fire codes—one nearly $12,000 and one that would not exceed $2,200; commissioners directed staff to budget a modest professional services amount and to present firmer fiscal estimates at the next budget review.
