Fire chief reports improved staffing, training and equipment needs

Fire Chief Alan Cavalieri told the council the Parowan Fire Department is "improving" but still faces maintenance needs and equipment renewal. He reported two structural engines, a 50‑foot ladder truck and multiple brush trucks in the fleet and said annual maintenance identified leaks and transmission issues that need addressing to ensure apparatus reliability.
Cavalieri highlighted personnel gains and training: 6 recruits completed Firefighter I school with substantial personal sacrifice, and the department runs consistent training every two weeks covering ventilation, hazmat, CPR and wildland operations. "We have 26 firefighters on the books right now ... 15 of our members are in the right equipment," he said, adding the department is pursuing turnouts and light turnouts for wildland response. Cavalieri cited the department's goal to improve its ISO rating, which affects insurance costs for residents, and thanked neighboring departments and mentors for support.
Councilors praised the progress and stressed ongoing support. The chief said equipment testing (pump, hose, hydrant flow) and continued training are planned to improve certifications and response capabilities. No formal motions were associated with the report; council encouraged staff to pursue upgrades and grant/partnership opportunities.
