The presenter described the Special Hazards and Operations team as a Type 1 HAZMAT team and walked through an onboard detection suite that includes flame ionization detectors (FID), photoionization detectors (PID), FTIR and Raman spectrometers, mass spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). He said the instruments allow crews to identify chemical hazards and determine public-safety risks on scene.
The presentation also noted a climate-controlled onboard work area where crews can research and process samples and 'cool off' while running instrumentation. The presenter said these capabilities support Level A entries and sample metering needed to decide whether the public faces an ongoing hazard.
