Residents press for environmental study; board says environmental and water tests will be required during permitting

Several commenters — including an architect/realtor representing nearby property owners — urged the board to conduct environmental studies before advancing the site, citing wetlands, a small river through parts of the parcel, a high water table in the proposed area, and wildlife corridors. One resident said: “There’s also wetlands that do go through there...there’s a small river that goes through there. That needs to be a factor.”

Board members responded that environmental testing and conditional-use permitting are anticipated steps. The chair said tests and environmental-impact analyses would be part of the conditional-use permit process and that the county will require information about the water table and wildlife impacts. “So we will be doing environmental impact statement as you would have recommended for the conditional use permit process,” the chair said.

Residents also asked about a helipad near Bear Cub and potential impacts on cemetery placement; board members said they will research helipad ownership and coordinate with emergency-service stakeholders if a cemetery boundary affects the pad’s operations.
