Pine County previews 2027 budget showing $2.28M structural gap

County Administrator Kelly Schroeder presented the 2027 preliminary budget at the July 7 meeting, noting the 2026 budget used $1,138,033 in one‑time funding and reserves and that departments were instructed to prepare status‑quo budget requests as the maximum. Schroeder said the preliminary 2027 budget reflects a projected deficit of $2,283,804.
Several departmental requests were presented in the committee‑of‑the‑whole session: Court Administration requested $71,200 (a 0.3% decrease from 2026's $71,400 appropriation); University of Minnesota Extension requested $259,452 (a 3.7% increase over the 2026 appropriation of $250,252); Pine County Historical Society requested $30,000 (no change); Pine Soil and Water Conservation District requested $75,000 (14.25% increase from $65,643); and Initiative Foundation requested $7,450 (no change). Schroeder said department presentations will continue at the July 21 county board meeting.
