The board voted unanimously to support an interdepartmental reconciliation of fire-code references after staff explained differences in guidance used by the two departments. James Jensen told members that the Department of Water Supply references an Insurance Services Office guideline while the Fire Prevention Bureau follows NFPA One; "these two guidelines speak the same language, but there are nooks and crannies to them where they're not aligned," he said.
Member Juanita Reyher-Colon moved that the board support the joint departmental effort; Member John Helly seconded. Member Paele Kiakona urged caution for older neighborhoods not built to current fire-code standards and asked for leniency where appropriate. Jensen said Lahaina will not be affected by leniency because a design-build contract is underway to implement fire-flow improvements there. The motion passed with seven ayes and the board also agreed that Chair Donna Sterling should draft a letter summarizing the board's comments for transmittal to the Council and departments.
