Planners allow tree reforestation funds to support beautification projects

During the July 23 meeting, city staff proposed an update to the tree reforestation fund provision in Appendix B of the zoning ordinance to allow collected funds to be used for beautification projects as well as tree preservation and mitigation.
"We update the tree reforestation fund provision to allow for funds to be used for beautification projects," said Wes Morrison, who also told commissioners that earlier proposals for a fee-in-lieu program had proven complicated in other cities. Commissioners generally expressed support for the simpler approach and for using dedicated funds to support on-the-ground beautification or mitigation projects rather than constructing a complex fee structure at this time.
Staff will forward the ordinance recommendation to City Council; any future decisions on detailed funding mechanisms or fee-in-lieu structures would require additional review and direction.
