Accomack Board Approves $27.7M FY26 Carryover for County Projects

The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted May 20 to approve a $27,698,361 carryover amendment to its FY26 budget, following a public hearing and a statement from the local school superintendent.

Dr. Miller, superintendent of Accomack County Public Schools, told the board the requested funds support ongoing operational needs and strategic priorities already underway in the division and thanked the board "for your partnership and your continued support of the students and staff of Accomack County Public Schools." After the public hearing closed, Supervisor [motion maker in transcript] moved to approve the amendment and the board carried the motion; the record shows eight votes in favor and one abstention.

The county administrator and finance staff had provided a list of projects making up the carryover and emphasized that state law required a public hearing because of the amendment's material size. The financial summary presented earlier in the meeting noted major revenues are ahead year to date by 2.9% ($1,887,803) compared with the prior fiscal year, and staff projects a 4.2% overall revenue increase for FY26 driven largely by final-quarter tax collections.

The board did not receive additional public speakers on the carryover; the superintendent also described planned maintenance work at a primary school included in the carryforward funds (repairing and restoring porch columns removed for safety). The amendment is effective as approved and staff will return with appropriation details as projects move forward.
