County board backs reauthorization of Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program

The Board unanimously adopted Resolution 2025-29 expressing strong support for reauthorization of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, which the resolution noted has enabled Vernon County to acquire 117 acres in past projects, including Esofea Park. County Conservationist Dave Hettenbach presented the item and said the program preserves natural areas, protects water quality and supports outdoor recreation that benefits the county tourist economy.
The resolution asks the county clerk to send copies to Governor Tony Evers, state legislators and the Wisconsin Counties Association, and specifically referenced legislative language (Ch. 23.09) as the statutory basis for the stewardship program. Board members voted in favor to endorse continued state funding and a 10-year reauthorization proposal in the governor’s budget.
