Vernon County adopts 2025 County Forest work plan; forester notes contractor concern

The Vernon County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution 2024-53 on Nov. 12, approving the County Forest 2025 Annual Work Plan. County Forester Nick Gilman presented the plan and outlined active timber sales and reforestation efforts, including a planned 61-acre reforestation project.
Gilman raised a concern about one sold timber sale where "the logger that purchased the sale is not financially able to finish the contract at this time," and said the county is working with the purchaser to ensure contract management practices are fulfilled. Gilman added he does "not feel rebidding is the best course of action given the size of the sale." He gave an example of a 37-acre advertised sale in Esofea that received a $110,000 bid and noted sales values will vary by stand quality and skidding difficulty. The resolution was adopted on a voice vote.
The work plan lists planned timber sale establishment, timber stand improvement goals and a five‑acre direct-seed reforestation project for Esofea, along with other compartment-level activities intended to make the county eligible for forest-management grant funds.
