"Some of the consistent themes that we saw throughout that was the lack of appropriate options for people with complex needs," she said, and participants repeatedly raised concerns about co-occurring disorders, individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, medically fragile youth, and youth with combined mental health and substance use needs.
Forum participants also identified transportation and workforce shortages as key operational barriers. Ashley noted that even when a bed is available, issues arranging timely secure or nonsecure transport can delay placements and complicate returns to the individual’s home region. She said the crisis-forum feedback will be incorporated into regional crisis collaboratives and used to guide future planning.
