Board approves community corrections grant application, appoints advisory-board representative

The Alger County Board of Commissioners voted June 15 to approve a community corrections grant application that would continue TRICAP opioid- and methamphetamine-specific programming and associated pretrial risk-assessment services.
Trevor Catholic, who introduced himself as "the community corrections director for Marquette Regional," told commissioners the application budgets for continuing the TRICAP program and for on-request pretrial risk assessments beginning Oct. 1. He said projections underlie the budget and that the program this year has an additional $50,000 from Wayne County because of higher utilization.
Trevor listed potential partner counties that may join if state funding is available (he named Iron, Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw) and said the state budget expected around July 1 will clarify funding. Commissioners asked how risk assessments would be requested and how intercounty referrals would be handled; Trevor said assessments would be requested on a per-need basis and that the county would notify the sheriff and coordinating agencies when a participant is referred or leaves another county.
The board moved to approve the FY2027 application and to appoint a commissioner to the community corrections advisory board; the motion received a second and passed by voice vote. Trevor said advisory-board meetings occur about five times a year and offered to provide meeting dates to commissioners.
