Insurance, reenactors and safety rules shape programming plans for Smith House

Committee members described how insurance requirements have been a persistent barrier to reenactor programming and in one case contributed to losing a skilled curator. A long-time member said that rigid insurance rules in the past "was the reason that we couldn't put a skateboard park in" and that reenactors faced similarly high barriers; the loss of a curator and turnover in reenactor staffing were cited as consequences.

Town staff said the current insurance agent may be more flexible and that for town-sponsored events the HR director can waive some requirements for nonprofits or the town can act as sponsor. Members discussed public-safety constraints — for example, the fire department had previously prohibited open fire during reenactments — and the need to confirm health-department rules for food demonstrations. The committee agreed to ask staff to contact the insurer and building/fire officials to determine what programming can proceed while preserving historic fabric and complying with safety rules.
