Ruston holds first reading on automated traffic cameras, names three initial locations

The City of Ruston held a first reading of ORD 1599 on Feb. 3 to authorize automated traffic safety cameras under chapter 46.63 RCW. The ordinance would add Chapter 16.05 to the Ruston Municipal Code and allows cameras in public park speed zones and one additional high-risk location per 10,000 population. The proposed camera sites listed in the ordinance are North Baltimore Street at North Commercial Street, North 51st Street at North Shirley Street, and North Pearl Street at North 49th Street.

Councilmember Jensen noted and supported a privacy clause that limits how long camera data are retained, and reminded the public that any revenue from the program is intended for traffic-safety improvements rather than the city92s general fund. The staff report describes compliance steps required by state law and says the program will include an analysis of proposed camera locations and equity considerations. The ordinance was set to return for a second reading and possible vote on Feb. 17, 2026.
