Vice Mayor Polk told the MPO that recent serious crashes on Harborview Road make the current 45 mph speed limit unsafe for a residential corridor. "The miles per hour at 45 is absolutely ludicrous," she said during the March 30 meeting, urging the board to pursue a lower posted speed or other physical changes.
County Commissioner Ticeo and staff explained that posted limits are tied to roadway design and the 85th‑percentile engineering practice; Ticeo noted the corridor is on the county sales‑tax priority list for a four‑lane redesign with medians and improved shoulders, with some phases forecast for completion in 2026–2028. Board members discussed enforcement limits (resource constraints for the Sheriff) and agreed to ask staff to analyze crash clustering and propose targeted mitigations such as localized speed reductions, warning signage or temporary channelization until reconstruction.
