Jay County awards multiple community grants; two requests denied

Commissioners reviewed a set of EDIT and community funding requests and approved the majority. The awards included $15,000 to Arts Place for its Arts in the Parks program, $10,000 to the Jay County Chamber for the Stay in Jay economic initiative, $35,000 to the John Jay Center for Learning toward a Residential Skilled Trades program (the center requested $50,000), and program support grants to the East Central Indiana SBDC ($4,000), Jay County 4‑H ($8,000), Dunkirk Volunteer Department ($2,500), Jay County 4th of July Committee ($5,000) and Redkey fireworks committee ($2,500).
Two requests were denied after review: Midwest Pet Refuge’s $6,750 request for gutter installation (commissioner Chad Aker cited a lack of economic benefit to the county) and a $50,000 request from the Redkey Town Board for a veteran and civilian cemetery (commissioners suggested the town board approach an existing cemetery committee). Motions to approve and deny carried unanimously.
