Commissioners document ballot review and tabulation steps during canvass

At the Nov. 14 canvass, Elk County officials reviewed 35 ballots, accepted 13, sent 12 through the tabulator and recorded totals in the Certificate of Votes Cast and permanent abstract book; qualifying write-ins and one hand-count ballot were added to tally books.
During the Elk County Board of Commissionersspecial canvass on Nov. 14, officials described their review process for determining ballot validity. Using Chapter 3 of the Kansas Election Standards as their guide, the commissioners examined each of 35 ballots and accepted 13 as valid for counting.
Of the accepted ballots, 12 were processed through the county tabulator and the resulting totals were entered on the Certificate of Votes Cast and into the permanent abstract book. Qualifying write-in names were recorded in the Tally Sheet Books; one accepted ballot was counted by hand and also entered into the tally records. The minutes note that the permanent abstract book was signed to finalize the record.
