Planning commissioners set multi-step schedule for comprehensive plan update

Surry County staff told the Planning Commission the comprehensive plan update will proceed in stages: a draft posted Oct. 22, a work session Oct. 27, a Nov. 3 open house, and a February public hearing, with a possible Board of Supervisors hearing in March.
Mr. Wade, the planning office secretary, outlined a multi-month schedule for Surry County’s comprehensive plan update and said consultants from Summit will return technical updates the Monday after staff submits small data packages. "We intend to have our 1st draft back from Summit and post it on our website, October 22," he said, and added that the commission will review the draft at a work session on Oct. 27 and hold a community open house on Nov. 3.
Wade said staff expects to collect public comments through December and to aim for a final draft in early January for a February public hearing before the Planning Commission, with a possible Board of Supervisors public hearing in March. He told commissioners the update responds to changed census and regulatory data and that subcommittees will help refine future land use maps. Commissioners asked who is on the subcommittee; Wade named Mr. Wooden, Mr. Hardy, Mr. Berryman, Mr. Lunsford and Ms. Judkins.
