County split over whether to fund an emergency management coordinator

The County Judge included funding for an emergency management coordinator in the proposed budget, describing the role as exempt and adding modest salary and equipment for training, travel and a computer. "The additional $63.44 would allow that position to go up to, 65," the County Judge said while outlining the proposed pay band and required expenses.
Commissioners responded with mixed views. One commissioner said the county's immediate public-facing need might be another patrol deputy that citizens see daily, while another argued the coordinator adds technical capability to chase grants and liaise with state partners. The court marked the item for further consideration and asked staff to show the expected duties, expected return on investment and whether other funding sources (grants) could reduce the local cost.
No hiring decision was made during the workshop; the court will revisit the proposal with supplemental budget detail and revenue calculations.
