TxDOT and Abilene staff brief board on multiple construction and design projects

TxDOT’s Cal Hayes and City of Abilene staff reviewed ongoing and planned projects including FM 89 widening, an FM 3034 overpass, railroad intersection work, I‑20 widening with Judge Ely overpass (June letting), sidewalk and signal projects, and multiple neighborhood reconstruction and design-phase efforts.
Cal Hayes, representing TxDOT’s Abilene area office, reviewed current construction and upcoming projects across the MPO area: FM 89 Buffalo Gap Road widening (final pavement work remaining), an overpass project on FM 3034 with bridge work expected to wrap up late 2026 or early 2027, Pioneer Drive railroad intersection work that opened recently, and upcoming closures on Shelton and Willis as contractors move work zones.
"We're looking at the end of this calendar year, or early 20 27, to have that 1 wrapped up," said Cal Hayes about ongoing bridge construction. Hayes also described an I‑20 widening and overpass at Judge Ely scheduled for a June 26 letting, an overlay project on the loop that will repave down to the Waldrop Interchange, and several safety and sidewalk projects.
City of Abilene staff presented the city's items under construction and in design — including Hyper Street reconstruction, South 14th concrete work shifting to asphalt, Butterfield Meadows alley reconstruction, neighborhood full-depth patching, and design phases for Maple 1A/1B and Old Anson Road walkability. City staff said some projects remain contingent on utility coordination and material availability and listed tentative letting windows from June through August for several items.
