Commission approves $87,036 for Waymakers Academy peer-mentor program

The Harvey County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Dec. 23 to provide $87,036 from the county opioid settlement fund to the Community Crisis Response Team (CCRT) to support one year of peer-mentor services for the Waymakers Academy.
Health Department Director Lynnette Redington told the commission the funding would cover two peer mentors and one supervisor/peer mentor for 50 weeks. "The CCRT will continue to seek other funding to support their services to Waymakers," Redington said. Redington and a CCRT member described the program as an eight-week curriculum inside the detention center that pairs licensed therapy from Mirror, Inc. with peer mentorship to help incarcerated individuals with substance use disorder find housing and employment on reentry.
Commissioners debated whether to direct opioid settlement funds to the program or require additional outside fundraising; Commissioner Terry Scott moved to approve the payment and Commissioner Becky Reimer seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. County staff noted the payment will come from the Harvey County Opioid Settlement Fund and that CCRT will continue pursuing other revenue sources to sustain services beyond 2026.
