Kay County authorizes elevator repairs after courthouse outage

The Kay County Board of County Commissioners on Feb. 9 authorized Allied Elevator Services, Inc. to troubleshoot and perform repairs to the courthouse elevators after officials said a drive failure left the elevators inoperable.
Commissioner Jason Shanks reported that both the county’s contracted vendor, Schindler, and Allied Elevator Services determined the elevator problem was the drive; Shanks said he was placing a $40,000 blanket purchase order to cover repair work. District Attorney Brian Hermanson warned the board that, without prompt repairs and accommodations, "the Courthouse could be considered shut down" and emphasized the county must ensure ADA compliance so citizens can access court proceedings.
The board voted unanimously to approve Allied Elevator Services to troubleshoot the brake and provide the necessary labor and repairs. Commissioners also discussed Schindler’s contract status, noting the county maintenance agreement with Schindler expires in May and that reliability concerns had factored into the decision to authorize outside repairs.
