Committee hears ED redesign validated; certificate-of-need could limit bed increases

Project staff told the committee the emergency department floor plan presented at the prior meeting has been validated by architects and engineers and will proceed to construction documents by mid next month.

The chair confirmed equipment layouts have been placed on the plan and staff noted that roof penetrations, a new air-handling unit and other mechanical work are part of the renovation. Committee members pressed for a proposed bed count; project staff said they would provide bed-count figures at the next meeting and cautioned that any expansion beyond the current plan would require navigating Alaska's certificate-of-need process.

Members asked project staff to coordinate with Public Works and suggested using contractors familiar with prior roof work to help produce bid-ready documents and streamline permitting. The committee requested the detailed bed-count and certificate-of-need implications in advance of the next meeting so members can evaluate staffing and capacity tradeoffs.
