Staff moves up comp-plan chapters after AEP request on small modular reactors; public comment solicited

Planning staff told the commission that, following a May joint work session, American Electric Power (AEP) requested that small modular reactors (SMRs) be considered in the county code and be allowed by right subject to board direction. To evaluate regulatory approaches, staff said parts of the comprehensive plan—chapter 4 (land use) and chapter 10 (infrastructure development)—will be presented at the next meeting (July 27) rather than later in the year. Staff is soliciting public feedback via a survey posted on the county website.
Staff emphasized the change affects only portions of the plan and that remaining chapters will be presented on the original timetable for adoption by the Board of Supervisors in January 2027. Commissioners were notified of the schedule change and encouraged to solicit public input ahead of the July meeting.
