Plan Commission approves variance limiting one additional dwelling, splits on one finding

The Miami County Plan Commission voted to approve VAR #142-26 with a stipulation limiting the property to one additional dwelling.
Corey Roser told the commission the variance language "is only meant to mean one additional dwelling," and recommended clearer wording in future variance descriptions. During public comment, Mark Coffing said family members "Mickey and Leigh Anne want to move out with us to help take care of us in our old age," and Scarlett Graves asked what would happen to the structure "in the future" when the immediate need ended. Mickey Ross responded, "it will not be a rental. It is an old farmhouse so it will probably be demolished." Resident Kathleen Patton said she was "confused about multiple dwellings being placed on the property" and asked what guarantees prevent more than one additional dwelling.
Committee member Grant Cade moved to allow only one additional dwelling; BJ Hunt seconded. The motion carried on a near-unanimous vote. Attorney Mark Frantz tallied the findings ballots; the commission recorded passage of findings 1 through 4 by 5-0 and finding 5 by 4-1. The commission’s action approves the variance with the one-dwelling limitation and notes a split on one required finding.
