Emergency management asks for backup position, mapping software and Starlink for command post

Jason Lane, the county emergency management director, told commissioners he’s been in the role eight months and seeks one additional position to handle plan writing, updates and operational backups during storm seasons. "I've been here 8 months now ... I'm a 1 person shop ... it would be very helpful to have a backup, especially during the spring storm season," Lane said, and noted he can leverage City Readiness Initiative grant funds from the Department of State Health Services to offset most of the position cost.
Lane also requested about $2,100 for mapping software to produce evacuation and critical infrastructure maps and proposed adding a Starlink satellite unit to the county's mobile command post to maintain communications and data where terrestrial radio coverage or cell service is lacking. He suggested trading an unused Tahoe to law enforcement and acquiring a more utilitarian pickup for emergency management duties; commissioners welcomed the framing and said the new budget committee will follow up with specific questions.
