The Westfir City Council on Oct. 6 approved a revised burn-permit application intended to serve both as a permit and as a way to collect information from residents about debris piles and burning eligibility.
During discussion, staff and council members repeatedly noted state fire marshal rules require a 50-foot clearance from structures, limiting where burning can occur. As one council member said of the form, “This is the permit,” and staff clarified that the city could also use the application as a database to identify which residents legally can burn and who will need alternative debris‑disposal options. The council moved to adopt the Oak Ridge Fire Department/Westfir burn permit form and the motion carried.
Councilors acknowledged the new form will not permit burning where state rules prohibit it but will help staff contact residents and explore alternatives such as contracted disposal or private wood‑lot options. The council did not vote on any follow-up program funding at the meeting; staff said they may collect additional information or create a separate sign‑up for residents who cannot meet the 50‑foot setback.
