County updates artificial reefs phase 2; deployment expected in late August

Shelley Alexander of the county environmental department described the phase 2 artificial reefs plan: structural modules (including 128 eight-foot limestone modules and additional ledge and disk modules) will form 25 patch reefs within the Escambia East nearshore artificial reef site roughly four miles southeast of Pensacola Pass.
Alexander said the FWC contract (FWC 21366) has been extended to December 2026 and that construction with Walter Breen was extended until Nov. 3 to allow extra time to build modules; deployment is expected to begin in late August. She also said the phase will complete a $1,300,000 grant the county received several years ago.
