Building official reports increased permitting and ongoing code sweeps

Philip Mize, the city's chief building official, presented the community development annual report and summarized code compliance, permitting and minimum-housing work.
"Last year for the sweep letters that were sent out, we sent out about 710 or 1,710. This year, to date, we've sent 1,601," Mize said, describing area sweeps that include advance mailed notices and informational flyers in English and Spanish. He reported notice violations this year of 281 with 40 citations resulting and said the department recovered a little over 10 tons of debris during recent sweeps.
Mize said the department has issued 447 permits so far this year (compared with 552 last year) and listed nine new commercial certificates of occupancy and 33 total certificate applications. On minimum housing, he said the city has closed 17 cases, two by demolition, two by repair-and-rebuild, five scheduled, and three cases on hold while owners work toward compliance.
Councilmembers asked for clarification on the sweep notification and owner responsibilities for roadside ditches; Mize said the city maintains drainage ditches that are municipal infrastructure but private property owners are responsible for maintenance between the curb and their property line where applicable. The council accepted the report for the record; no formal action was required.
