State Board approves some library-media deregulation requests, asks two districts to reapply

The State Board of Education on May 21 approved deregulation requests under 70 O.S. § 3-126 that allow districts to reduce library hours or supervise library services through alternatives such as a library aide rather than a certified librarian. The board approved Nobel and South Coffeyville for the 2025–2026 school year and approved Cyril and Fairland for 2026–2027.
The board also denied deregulation requests for Maysville and Middleberg for 2026–2027, asking each district to resubmit in September with documentation showing they had exhausted efforts to hire a certified library-media specialist. Board Member Becky Carson moved the approvals and denials; Board Member Mike Tinney and Board Member Wes Nofire are recorded among the voting members. The minutes show the denials carry the administrative instruction to return with additional hiring documentation.
