Commission approves Conditional Use Permit for private grass airstrip owned by Mathiases with state/federal permit condition

The Traverse County Board on Nov. 19 approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application from Jonathan and Marilyn Mathias to reconstruct a previously existing private grass landing strip for personal use and potential use by aerial crop applicators. Zoning Administrator Ben Oleson appeared via Zoom to present the request.
The permit would allow up to two grass runways, each up to 3,300 feet in length and up to 100 feet in width. The Planning Commission recommended approval with conditions: flexibility on exact runway dimensions to meet state and federal requirements; the applicant must obtain all required state and federal permits or approvals within 24 months or the County approval will expire; and if those permits lapse for more than 24 months the conditional use approval will also expire. Commissioner Dwight Nelson moved approval, Commissioner Kayla Schmidt seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The conditions recorded by the Board place responsibility on the Mathiases to secure outside permits; County staff noted the approval does not substitute for required state or federal permissions. The record does not indicate any dissenting votes or additional amendments to the Planning Commission's recommended findings of fact.
