Darien board sets 108 elementary class sections for 2026–27, gives superintendent flexibility

"So we are requesting, that we set a 108 total elementary classroom sections based on the current enrollment and the board's classroom class size guidelines," Rich said, explaining that the district budgeted 108 sections and that enrollment stands at 4,404 students (34 fewer than last year and 37 fewer than projections). He highlighted three sections that were 'close to tipping' and could require an additional section if enrollment shifts: Holmes 3rd and 5th grades (one student away) and Oxbridge kindergarten (two students away).
The board discussed options for handling near‑threshold classes, superintendent flexibility to open a section if numbers rise, and the hiring implications of adding a section. Joanna moved the motion to approve 108 sections with flexibility for the superintendent to add sections based on enrollment; Bill seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
