Selectboard approves Solid Waste Implementation Plan; Facilities director flags cardboard and bear issues

Facilities Director Scott Bushee briefed the Selectboard on Transfer Station operations and solid-waste management at the July 2 meeting. Bushee reported an increase in Casella collection fees, difficulty keeping the cardboard bin clean, recurring bear problems at the Transfer Station, and a portion of the fencing that requires reinforcement.
Bushee recommended amending the town's contract with Casella to move the cardboard stream to zero-sort to reduce contamination. Bushee and Town Administrator Lissa Stark described outreach they have undertaken to local businesses and schools as required under the town's Solid Waste Implementation Plan (SWIP). The Selectboard approved the SWIP as presented (motion by Isaacs; seconded by Grant) on a unanimous vote.
No budget figures or contract amendments were adopted at the meeting; the minutes reflect that the board approved the Plan 'as written' and directed staff to continue outreach and implementation steps described in the Plan.
