Board hears warnings about traffic, long timelines as port activity grows

Board members pressed the Economic Alliance on infrastructure timelines tied to Port of Houston growth and highway projects; Alliance staff said accelerating work can be expensive — TxDOT quoted $14 million to reduce one project’s schedule by six months — and that some corridor improvements may take up to a decade to finish.

Board member Chuck raised concerns about forecasts the Port of Houston’s throughput could double over the next decade and asked whether the board should push federal partners to expedite highways including Highway 225, Beltway 8 and the 610 bridge. Chuck said the combination of traffic and ongoing construction "just seems like a disaster in the making."
