The U.S. Census Bureau hosted a webinar demonstrating My Community Explorer (MCE), an interactive mapping tool that merges near-real-time incident layers with Census datasets to help local officials and planners assess local impacts. Crystal Jimerson, a training specialist, opened the session and introduced the program and logistics for audience questions.
Meredith Maxwell, a data dissemination specialist, led the demonstration and described MCE as an interactive map-based tool that "combines real time disaster tracking information, such as hurricane paths, storms, wildfires, with Census Bureau data on affected areas to help understand the potential impact". The presentation walked through the landing page, the responsive legend, community context pane and an Excel-like table view for extracting tract- and county-level data. Maxwell noted MCE is currently at version 4.6 and that supplemental materials and a recording will be posted on Census Academy.
