Callaway Foundation steps back; officials say private development and grants will drive implementation

During the meeting Bill Honeycutt said the last downtown plan was paid for entirely by the Callaway Foundation and that foundation support helped deliver projects now in place. "That last plan was done and paid for entirely by the Callaway Foundation," Honeycutt said, listing projects such as the hotel, AMC theater and restaurants that he said resulted from that investment.
Honeycutt said the Callaway Foundation has recently shifted priorities toward education and affordable housing, and will not fund a new plan to the same extent. He told the authority implementation funding for future projects is expected to come largely from private developers and grant sources once the community has a clear, endorsed plan.
