ADU conversion at 905 West Michigan approved despite one objection

The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a Specific Use Designation allowing the conversion of a detached garage at 905 West Michigan Avenue into an accessory dwelling unit for the applicant Caitlin Williams. The planner presenting the item said the request is compatible with the Tall City Tomorrow comprehensive plan and staff recommended approval subject to conditions similar to other ADUs.

Caitlin Williams introduced herself for the record as "Caitlin Williams, 905 West Michigan Avenue, Midland, Texas 79701" and asked about an objection that staff had noted. The planner said staff received one objection representing 6.627 percent of the protest, and the objection cited concern about a fire hydrant near the property. During discussion the applicant and participants clarified that direct contact with the original property owner was unsuccessful because that owner had died and the current contacts are siblings.

Commissioner Lefoy moved to approve and Commissioner Martin seconded; the motion passed unanimously. Staff recommended approval with conditions; no further public speakers appeared to press the objection at the hearing.
