Student member urges updated tree-canopy data; USDA 2023 dataset identified

Collin O'Donnell, the Commission's non-voting student member, presented findings from a tree-canopy analysis using iTree tools and said the Commission's existing data are from 2021 and no longer reflect current conditions. O'Donnell identified a more recent 2023 dataset available via the USDA Department of Forestry that would provide updated coverage but noted the file is roughly 6 gigabytes and covers the continental United States, which poses access and processing challenges for individuals.
O'Donnell and other members discussed solutions including using City resources to download and host the data for localized analysis. Audience member Leo Wible offered his GIS and federal satellite-data expertise and a land-cover project for Avon up to 2024; Chair Varga said he will coordinate with the Mayor to find ways to incorporate Wible's assistance.
