Building official: permits rose while office prepares for electronic permitting

The county's building official told the board the department handled a high volume of permits in the last year and is planning technology upgrades to streamline work.
"Over the last year, we issued 553 permits. 67 new dwellings went up, 15 new commercial buildings went up, 90 certificate of occupancies were issued," the building official said. The office recorded about 1,690 inspections and said it has completed code-update training for the 2021 code cycle. To improve service and records management, staff proposed electronic permitting software, digital archiving of permanent files, and making more forms available online.
The official said the permit program is intended to be self-sufficient and recommended targeted fee increases (for example, commercial solar and tower-related fees) to ensure permit revenue covers department costs. Staff will provide a core-fee comparison with equivalent counties on request.
