Commissioner and residents press for clearer fire-response commitments as Val Nova advances

Concerns about emergency response times and station siting were a central point of debate during consideration of the Val Nova preliminary plat. A commissioner asked why the current response time would be 20 minutes and when a closer fire station would be built; planning staff said they had been in dialogue with Starfire and Eagle Fire and estimated it could be "a year or 2" before a new station might be constructed, depending on negotiations and funding.

Resident Eric Shermer urged clearer signage and suggested sprinklers in early homes because, he said, a closer station may not be in place for years. "20 minutes is a long time when it comes to fires burning and the like," Shermer said, urging greater urgency in planning. The applicant, Kendall Hancey (Horrocks), said the team is working with Starfire to address the district's recommendations: "the recommendations that were provided, from the Starfire District, we've we've done our best to try and follow that and and meet with them to to make sure that... we're trying our best to go ahead and address those." Staff also pointed to existing hydrants and an installed water system as measures that meet current fire-flow requirements, while noting long-term station siting and staffing remain subject to developer contributions and district planning.

The concern contributed to at least one commissioner announcing a planned no vote on the Val Nova recommendation, though the commission ultimately voted to recommend the plat with conditions. Commissioners and staff recorded plans to follow up on easement language, signage and coordination with fire districts.
