Parks board backs prioritizing lighting, hardscape and maintenance over new projects
The Abilene Parks Board voted to recommend that city administration prioritize park safety upgrades (lighting), hardscape repairs and maintenance/amenity replacement instead of new construction, after a presentation that found high capital and amenity needs and reduced staffing compared with 2020 levels.

Leslie Andrews, director of parks and recreation, told the Parks and Recreation Board that the department's assessment shows sizable inventory and maintenance needs across the city: "We only have 11 people in this division taking care of over 400 buildings" and "the key takeaways were 41% of the capital assets have high levels of capital improvement needs," she said.
