Steuben County committee approves corrective action plan after State Comptroller audit; updates to administrative code planned

County Manager Jack K. Wheeler presented a corrective action plan responding to the State Comptroller’s audit titled “Steuben County Financial Management.” The Finance Committee voted 5‑0 to approve the plan and to forward it to the full legislature for adoption.
Wheeler said the plan will include updating the county Administrative Code to require multi‑year financial and capital planning. Chair Scott J. Van Etten criticized the State Comptroller’s report during the discussion, saying the county budgets conservatively and that the Comptroller’s revenue estimates and reporting were inconsistent; Van Etten called aspects of the audit “kind of hypocritical” and said better information from the comptroller would help the county budget more closely to expected sales tax receipts. Wheeler agreed with that assessment.
The committee adopted the corrective action plan as presented and directed staff to forward it to the full Steuben County Legislature for final approval.
