Local officials warn 72 SNAP cases will be affected by reinstated ABAWD work rules

Wyoming County staff told the Human Services Committee that 72 of about 1,500 local SNAP cases could lose benefits when ABAWD work requirements resume June 2026 after the statewide waiver ended Feb. 28, 2026. Committee received guidance on work-hour requirements and affected populations.

Heather Sheehan, Principal Social Services Program Specialist, told the Wyoming County Human Services Committee that "the statewide ABAWD waiver ended February 28, 2026. By June 1, 2026, many individuals aged 18-64 must work or participate in qualifying work activities for at least 80 hours a month to maintain benefits." She said about 72 of roughly 1,500 local SNAP cases would be affected under the reinstated rules.
