Building department reports rising permit activity and new FEMA mapping workload

Patrick County's building department reported a notable rise in permit activity and associated fee collections in recent years and outlined challenges tied to floodplain remapping.
Inspector Nick D'Addario (voice 16) presented comparative permit data for the last three years and a longer 2019–2025 permit collection comparison, noting a steady climb in project values and an increase in permits related to accessory residential structures and residential solar installations. He also said the county adopted the 2021 Uniform Statewide Building Code in 2025, which increased inspection requirements and workload for staff. D'Addario highlighted the FEMA floodplain remapping effort that will require staff to identify and notify affected property owners and noted the department hired a new inspector (Preston) in November to help handle the caseload.
D'Addario cautioned that some of the dollar figures recited in the meeting record were difficult to convey conversationally and should be checked in the written report packet distributed to supervisors.
